What is the name of the world's most expensive spice?

    3. False saffron - what is it?

The most expensive spice in the world is saffron - whose price per kilogram exceeds 20 000 zlotys. It is a spice derived from a plant called 'Crocus sativus', characterised by a unique, intense flavour.

The world's most expensive spice - what should you know?

Saffron - the world's most expensive spice - is most often used to season dishes such as curry. The easiest way to recognise it is by its colour - which is usually bright red with a slight golden tinge. Already the appearance of saffron brings to mind luxury and elegance - but its high price is due not only to its aesthetic, taste and health-promoting qualities, but above all to the difficulty of sourcing the spice. Although it originates from areas of Western Asia - it is also successfully cultivated in Europe, where Spain holds a leading position.

The most expensive spice in the world - for which dishes?

Saffron will prove useful for seasoning dishes such as:

    • paella
    • saffron rice
    • risotto
    • soups
    • sauces
    • couscous
    • cakes

The undoubted advantage of this unique seasoning is its ability to give a beautiful golden colour to dishes through it.

False saffron - what is it?

False saffron, also known as safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), is often confused with real saffron, but it is a completely different plant that produces similar-looking but less valuable flowers. Although safflower can be used as a substitute for saffron because of its similarity in colour, it is no match for the taste, aroma and health benefits that real saffron offers.
