Cloves - Health benefits of the aromatic spice

    Contents
    1. Health effects of cloves(Syzygium aromaticum)
    2. Uses and properties of cloves
    3. Summary

Cloves are one of the oldest spices known to mankind. They are aromatic flower buds originating from the clove tree. Known for their distinctive flavour and medicinal properties, they have been used for centuries in various culinary and therapeutic applications. Let's take a closer look at their health benefits. We will answer the most frequently asked questions about the properties and uses of cloves.

    Health effects of cloves(Syzygium aromaticum)

Cloves have long been used in folk medicine. However, it is worth knowing that many studies have been carried out on the health properties of cloves. We cite some of them below. These studies confirm many of the traditional uses of cloves and uncover new aspects of their effects on human health. They provide an understanding of the scientific basis for the observed effects and cement the position of cloves among natural health aids. Still, many of their properties that we often read about stem from folk beliefs and traditional beliefs. We do not deny their centuries-old tradition, but when it comes to our health it is always important to consult specialists.

    Are cloves antioxidant?

Yes, cloves are a powerful antioxidant. They contain a high amount of polyphenols, which are plant compounds with powerful antioxidant properties. Polyphenols neutralise free radicals in the body, helping to protect cells from damage and delay the ageing process. Research conducted by the US Department of Agriculture (in collaboration with universities and private companies) has shown that among various foods, cloves have the highest polyphenol content, highlighting their unique potential as an antioxidant*.

What other health properties do cloves have?

In addition, cloves exhibit antimicrobial properties, meaning that they can inhibit the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria. An in vitro study showed that clove essential oil kills three common types of bacteria, including E. coli, responsible for food poisoning*. In addition, the antimicrobial properties of clove may contribute to oral health. In one study, compounds isolated from cloves inhibited the growth of bacteria that cause gum disease. In another study, 40 people tested a mouthwash based on tea tree oil, clove and basil, which improved gum health and reduced plaque and bacteria**.

Some studies suggest that cloves and the compounds they contain may help reduce oxidative stress and protect the liver. However, it is important to remember that some of these studies have been conducted on animals, so further research is needed on this issue.

Do cloves contain vitamins and trace minerals?

Cloves contain fibre, vitamins and minerals. However, in combination with their intake, they can be considered mainly as a valuable source of manganese (it is necessary for the production of enzymes involved in metabolic processes and supports the development and functioning of the nervous system). 1 teaspoon (2g) contains 55%* of the daily requirement of this micronutrient. Vitamin K in the same serving is only 2%* of the daily requirement. Therefore, apart from manganese, cloves do not provide significant amounts of other nutrients.

    Uses and properties of cloves

As demonstrated above, cloves are, for good reason, a spice to which numerous health properties are attributed. We have collected the questions you often ask about the properties of cloves and will answer them in turn. We will divide this section into two parts, actions for which we have found scientific evidence and actions based on traditional beliefs (including Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine). For these activities there is no hard scientific evidence, but on the other hand this does not negate centuries of observations.

Effects of cloves based on traditional beliefs

    • What are the benefits of eating two cloves a day?

    • Do cloves work against parasites?
Cloves have anti-parasitic properties, especially against certain roundworms and intestinal parasites. To benefit from these properties, you can take clove oil under the supervision of a specialist or drink an infusion of cloves, preferably after consulting your doctor.
    • Do cloves have a wind-propelling effect?

We will now answer the questions you often ask about how to consume cloves

    • How do I prepare cloves for drinking?
Add 2-3 cloves to a glass of boiling water. Leave for 10-15 minutes, strain and drink. You can add honey or lemon for a better taste.

Although there is no set amount, it is recommended to eat 2-3 cloves per day to enjoy their health benefits without experiencing adverse effects.
    • Are all cloves edible?
Yes, all cloves from the clove tree are edible. However, they are usually used in small quantities due to their strong taste.
    • Can cloves be eaten alone?
Yes, cloves can be eaten on their own, although their strong flavour may not suit some people. It is better to appreciate them by adding them to dishes or drinks.
    • How long can cloves be chewed?
You can chew cloves for a few minutes until you feel relief from the symptoms or until the taste disappears. It is recommended not to chew cloves for more than a few minutes as they can become an irritant to the mouth.
    • Can clove infusion be drunk daily?
Drinking clove infusion in moderation is safe for most people. However, excessive consumption can lead to potential side effects. Always consult a specialist before including any herb or spice in your daily diet.

    Summary

Cloves are not only a tasty spice, but also a natural healing agent. Like any product, it is worth using it in moderation and being aware of its properties. When using spices for health purposes, it is advisable to go for Organic Farming spices, as no chemicals or pesticides are used in their cultivation. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult a doctor or nutritionist.
